Our 2021 Career Change Survey results

Part of our ongoing mission at Careershifters is to publish research that can help raise awareness of career change issues and improve the support on offer for people in career transition.

As such, we're delighted to share the results of a survey conducted with more than 5,000 members of our global audience in 2021.

Our survey found:

  • The biggest motivation for career change is dissatisfaction with their role (56%), followed by lack of satisfaction with the culture or management in their company (16%), followed by poor work-life balance (12%);
  • 28% want to move into another job; 12% want to start their own business; 37% want a combination of the two;
  • The majority (42%) have been thinking about making a career change for 1-2 years, with almost 1 in 5 people thinking about making a career change for more than 5 years.

The survey was carrried out between June and July 2021 through an online questionnaire.

Participants were 65% female, 32% male, 3% other, and were broadly split across different age groups (22% up to 29, 32% in their 30s, 25% in their 40s, 17% in their 50s, and 4% 60+).
