I went to visit The School of Life recently to see what it could offer career changers. It is a "new social enterprise offering good ideas for everyday living". Alain de Botton is one of their Ambassadors.
They have a website and online shop as well as a centre in London that offers courses and services on everything from how to achieve fulfilment at work to exploring the nature of relationships. They'd been recommended to me so I invited myself along to properly check it out.
I met up with two of the directors and loved their attitude and the intelligence with which they approach the topic of 'life' - not an easy thing to do, I find, without coming across as cheesey, new-age or sanctimonious, but they've managed it brilliantly.
Career change is very often a journey of self-discovery and understanding and The School of Life is a great place to inspire and guide people through that journey.
"The School of Life is a place to step back and think intelligently about common concerns. You will not be cornered by any dogma, but directed towards a variety of ideas - from philosophy to literature, psychology to the visual arts – that tickle, exercise and expand your mind. You’ll meet other curious, sociable and open-minded people in an atmosphere of exploration and enjoyment."

You can visit the centre itself anytime during the week but on 5th September they are holding an Open Day
" Staff and faculty will be on hand throughout the day able to tell you about our five essential courses on Love, Work, Family, Play and Politics. The bibliotherapists will be offering taster sessions. There’ll be a virtual travel clinic at which you can find out all about our upcoming programme of holidays. And a Life Lessons stall dispensing philosophical ideas on matters as eclectic as telling the truth, finding the right job, making resolutions and falling in love.
The School of Life’s Open Day is part of the Marchmont Street Festival. Come and enjoy music, food and stalls all up and down Marchmont Street that day."
