"I'm only 3 years into my HR career, currently at an HR consultancy. I previously worked in HR in-house at a bank. I don't enjoy my current job and have decided I wanted to move back in-house. Because I have some gaps in my in-house experience, organisations I'm worried about career progression. I also wonder if I should be looking outside of HR. I have a degree in Modern Languages and a CIPD qualification I've recently completed via distance learning. How can I untangle the various threads and find something that makes me happy?"

Yesterday I took part in a 5K running race and at the end of it a fellow runner came up to me and said he'd been using me as a pace-setter to make him run faster in the final stages of the race! I was surprised, I didn't think i'd been running particularly quickly and it never occurred to me that anyone might pick me to help them run.
It got me thinking in general about ways in which we might unknowingly be helping or impacting on others. Have you ever made a brave choice or tried something new out, and by doing so inspired someone else?

I used to think that job titles were just simple ways for others to quickly figure out who you are and what you do. But actually what we call ourselves and how we introduce ourselves to others is way more than that. And when changing career, the words you use to describe your previous work titles and the framing you give to the experiences you have is super important. They can help you move across fields more easily, and help you to re-focus on what it is you want to do next.

In 2001 Damian decided to take a year’s sabbatical. He was given some funding for Street League and the rest is history. “It’s the longest sabbatical ever!”, Damian now jokes. “It was an opportunity to go and do this, and so I just jumped. Once you’ve jumped, you figure out how to fly on the way down. That’s the only way to do things, otherwise nothing ever happens.” More
