As some inspired lunacy, I decided to interview myself using the quesions in my article 'From 9-5 to Self-Made Career'. I didn't think I had the answers, but, err, apparently I do. I suggest anyone seeking answers to these or similar questions try asking themselves! You never know what kind of inner knowledge you've got inside!
How do you get clear on what's best for you?
What's best for you is whatever makes you happy and doesn't give you a sinking feeling in your stomach, or bores you. It makes you feel completely in the present, appreciating life. You feel on the same wavelength as the people around you. What's best for you is the best. Whatever, in your mind, is the best is obviously best for you. It doesn't get much simpler than that! That could be anything from champagne cocktails to making your own films. Whatever makes you feel good inside, empowered, and fulfilled - without lack or want. That's the best.
Won't people think I'm mad if i want to do something radically different, or not 'expected' of me?
Only the ones that don't truly know you. The ones who really know who you are deep down will not be in the least bit surprised. Your true friends and supporters enjoy that you're unconventional and love asking what you're up to next as it's always something exciting or different. That inspires them.
How do you get tentative ideas off the ground?
Passion, obsession, inspiration, a competitive streak and wanting to do better get ideas off the ground. A strong sense of self helps too. As Nike say 'Just Do It'. Don't even think while you're taking action. As long as you're not taking a really dumb risk you've got nothing to lose and all to gain and learn from. Don't even worry about making mistakes, either. Bring 'em on!
How do you move from doing what you love as a hobby to getting paid to do it?
Take control. Value your work. Take it into your own hands to make it a money-making enterprise. Be bloody good at what you do and able to stand up for your work, and others will value it too. Focus on what you can bring or do that's unique + sets you apart, make that your money magnet. Knowledge that 'this is who I am' and 'this is what i'm good at, and want to do' will propell your confidence.
