Counting down...

By kmorgan

The countdown begins! Suddenly, a month has whizzed by and I now have exactly three days of meaningful employment left! It’s been an interesting month; career plans have chopped and changed more often than ever (it must be the pressure of imminent freedom) but one or two consistencies have floated to the top….Spanish (why did I give this up after A level?!) and the need to write ‘stuff’. This, I fear, could just be an over reaction to years neglecting to write so much as a birthday card coherently. Time will tell. As yet I am not sure whether either or both of these can be worked into a possible career change but I have decided to give myself the summer to think it all over, cogitate, no doubt procrastinate, do some useful courses and then hit the streets again in September with a new insight (ahem) into my chosen path in life. This, at least, is the theory. The back up plan is to continue to work in television but try and be a bit more freelance; thus giving myself oodles of time to do other stuff in between jobs. I have been spurred on by a friend who does this whilst simultaneously setting up her own interior design company. Wowzers.

From where I am now (in an office, a teensy bit bored and idealising the world outside these four walls) the thought of all this seems infinitely achievable and doubtless will lead me to a more fulfilling and hopefully financially more rewarding career. In reality however, (and when I did the actual sums) I discovered that as a freelancer I would need to work quite a bit to get the same salary I am on now! Conundrum. I could end up like a hamster on a treadmill, always trying to catch up with myself and scrounging for the next job in order to make ends meet in which case the theory about having time off ‘in between jobs’ a mere pipe dream! This is something I still need to work out. But, on the positive side, I do have the summer in which to do that. Big decisions ahead – bring it on!
