By changing your attitude you could find your dream job a lot more easily - you could even be sitting on it but not have realized it, as your attitude may have prevented you from seeing it!
What do I mean?
"If I only had X, then all would be okay."
I hear this from my clients a lot.
"If I only had more time/money, then I could relax."
I hear it from my friends too.
"If you only buy Y, then life will be fab."
And I hear it in almost every TV ad as well.
Is it really that easy? If you only have this magical thing - X, Y, time, money, whatever it might be for you - would life really be that great?
How many times have you fallen for the TV ad, bought Y, and realised that life being fab only lasted a short while, and then it was pretty much back to normal?
Unfortunately, that's the same thing with the elusive dream job'.ÂÂÂ
What am I talking about? It's about this trap that we all seem to fall into. I've seen it called the have-do-be' trap, which I think describes it well. The If I only HAD X, then I could DO Y, and then I would BE (fill in the blank - Happy? Successful?)' trap.
But as falling for that TV ad will probably have taught you already, life doesn't quite work that way. You actually have to start from the other end, and approach life from the be-do-have' perspective. In other words, If I WAS X, I would DO Y and then HAVE Z'. So what (or better yet who) do you want to be?ÂÂÂ
A good place to start is to look at what you think that dream job would give you. Happiness? Fulfillment?
The beauty of this is that you don't have to wait. You can start RIGHT NOW.
Think about it, how would what you do today change, if you started from the BEING perspective.
If I was HAPPY, then I would DO ??? and thus HAVE ????
Well, guess what? You can choose your mood. You can choose to be depressed, or happy, or fulfilled or whatever it is you want to be.
Am I saying that you should just be happy where you are? No. I'm saying that by changing your being, your actions will change, and thus you can find your dream job with more ease. You can start now, and use that energy to change, and find what's right for you. Many career change stories involve someone deciding one morning that they'd had enough, that they were going to approach the world from a different perspective, and all of a sudden all kinds of actions started to come from this new energy.
Think how differently you would approach what you do today, if you said: "I am fulfilled". If you come from a place of being fulfilled, I bet your actions will be different than if you came from a place of "I am depressed". So think about it: If I was feeling fulfilled, what would I do? And then do them! Start there.
You may have heard that famous Einstein quote: "The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them." - I think the same applies to how you approach your search for the right career for you. Change the level of thinking (in this case your mood about it) and what you start doing will change - guaranteed. It's not getting the dream job that will make you happy, it's being happy that will get you the dream job, and that might make you even happier. Try it!
