Mo' money, mo' money

By Tony Li

As you've probably guessed from the title, this instalment is more fiscal than altruistic in content.

The volunteering is still going well. I think I've identified nearly every group in the Manchester Leeds LS6 area that could possibly be interested in ethical and Fairtrade clothing/make-up etc, and emailed the Arkadash owners their details.

After my initial concerns about taking on a third volunteer group on - namely Just Change - it seems apparent that they could provide the team environment I was looking for. We have two events coming up in November to promote Just Change and its associated products, and we have a good plan on how we're going to organise them.

There's not that much change on the Olive Coop front. Events, I am learning, move slowly in a cooperative and I haven't even started doing anything remotely related to tours just yet.

All in all, this is going well. Unfortunately the same can't be said of my paid work. After having my hours slashed and realising that as my social life improves a 5:50 start on a Saturday morning is not something I look forward to, I'm seeking different employment. My name and CV is with a few local recruitment agents, I'm checking Manchester Gumtree regularly and I'm even doing some paid market reasearch one evening at the end of this month - 1.5 hours work being the equivalent of nearly a weekend's work where I'm currently at. I'm considering doing Christmas jobs in a local store, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to as I don't expect to get paid that much more per hour than I do now.

I'd like to hang on for a temp office job, but only wanting 3 days a week part-time severely narrows my options on that front. It's funny how I thought I would be happy earning little before I moved back up. To be honest, I don't need that much and it would help if I didn't give my mum something for housekeeping every month.

That said, it can be difficult to independent when you're living under your parents roof and whilst throwing money at the problem isn't the alpha-omega solution, at least it's a start!

I intended to journal my cash flow problem; I've ended up revealing my deep-seated wish to remain independent.

Better than therapy, this! :)

Hi Tony
I was just reading your logs and identifying with the career 'crisis' you went through - hows it all going?
I hope you're getting on well!

Yeah, I'm not getting on badly thanks. Going off to India to volunteer with the environmental charity on the 16th. Just preparing for that really.

If you want to chat about anything you can find me on Facebook (Tony Li, Manchester Network). My travel blog will also be linked to my Facebook page so you can check out how I get on working overseas through that too.

All the best.

T
