"Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art" Andy Warhol
It's quite something to look back at my early blogs almost a year ago and really get present to how far I've got since then. What seemed like a far off dream, I have achieved and it's every bit as liberating and fulfilling as I had imagined.
I wrote an early blog at the beginning of my Careershift called 'Days when I did what I did simply because I enjoyed it'. I remembered with nostalgia, happier days: 'a time of no limits, when I dreamed freely and created whatever role I wanted for myself...Playing with colour and patterns, learning and discovering as I went along, being with people, creating with them, connecting with them, I was content, fulfilled and happy. I did things because I enjoyed doing them, because I wanted to have fun. I knew what I wanted to do and I did it.'
Almost a year down the line and that's exactly what my life and working days look like now. I have mastered the art of earning money doing things I enjoy. I love my lifestyle, love the different kinds of work I do. I have discovered that work can be a wonderful source of new experiences, creativity, fun and adventure. I now have a portfolio career of 5 different strands, adding more all the time.
Since starting my careershift journey I have developed a confidence to create and grab new and exciting work opportunities. For example most recently a job in Athens for an events company led to the opportunity of leading a weekly Spanish workshop for the staff of the events company on my return to London.
I don't know where these oporutnities are going to lead, but I always have a good feel for an opportunity that has potential to open new and unexpected doors. That's the adventure of it.
So, I now feel I have achieved what I set out to achieve. I proved, not just for myself, but for all you Careershifters out there that working in a way that you love really is possible. Work doesn't have to be hard and it can be so much fun!
Now I'm ready for a new challenge. I want to master the art of making money in abundance while doing things that I love. I want to discover and master the art of business.
The same old doubts of whether it is really possible, whether I have what it takes, arise again. And although the doubt is uncomfortable it also serves as a means to motivate me. I love a good challenge I'll prove that it can be done. We can do what we love and earn all the money we want.
But I know little about the art of business and creating an abundance of money. It's a whole new world for me to explore. So where to start? First things first who can I learn from? Biographies of successful entrepeuneurs and the story of companies like Innocent Smoothies and Ebay seem like the logical first step. So I search the internet and browse some books. But I'd also like to hear these people talk, meet some successful entrepeneurs, learn from them, maybe even find myself a mentor.
So watch this space. This kid's going to get rich.
