The Power of Words when bringing about change...

By Selina Barker

About three months ago I did a values assessment and identified my six key values. It was the first time I really got the power of this seemingly simple exercise. It really blew me away - to identify myself and what I found most important in life in six inspiring words was surprisingly moving.

However it hasn't been until now, after three months have passed and I can look back and see how my life has evolved since doing that exercise, that I can now appreciate the full power of choosing those six values and keeping them alive in my mind - it has had an impact short of witchcraft! Since identifying those six values, they have appeared stronger and stronger in all areas of my life. My life has literally turned into the shape of those values: fun, play, friendship, laughter, love for others, creativity and I wasn't making that change happen consciously.

Whether it's the law of attraction or the power of focusing your attention or both, it's as if by identfying myself with those words my life suddenly went 'oh ok, that's what we're supposed to look like!' and all areas of my life started shuffling around so that they reflected those 6 values. If I thought my life was pretty full of fun, laughter and friendship already, then I can now say that it's literally busting out at the seams with it, which would explain why I've been feeling so incredibly happy and lucky of late.

It seems as if by identifying those values I was actually switching them on so that they start to shine and spread throughout all areas of my life. I think it worked particularly because they weren't values that I thought I 'should' have, they are values that excite me, lift me, make me smile. They come easily.

It has left me now excited and keen to experiment with the power words can have when we give them importance and keep them at the forefront of our minds.

If choosing those six values, identifying myself with them and keeping them fresh in mind for a few months had that kind of impact on my life then will it happen if I choose another six words? And if it does then we'd all better be pretty careful about the words we're idetnfiying ourselves with - particularly those negative words - because they'll be having just the same impact on our lives. This is something we all know about - look at all the fairytales and legends that often warn of, the power of words, with stories of spells, magic and witchcraft.

So I'm going to try it out - I'm going to try another six values to see if over the following three months they too start to really grow in strength in my life. All this fun, play and laughter is great but I'm craving balance, the outdoors, nature, wholesome healthiness as well as all the fun. My career also seems to be craving new direction and a new shape with a desire for recognition, financial sucess etc so we'll see if I pop some of those in there.

Ultimately what I want to explore is to what extent we can literally programme ourselves with values so that they start to really shine brightly in our lives. I'll report back in 3 months on how it went.

Have a go yourself. Choose six values that really mean a lot to you and that you are currently naturally drawn to or even craving. Put those six values up somewhere where you'll see them everyday and focus on bringing those values into all areas of your life, not just your career. I found that I didn't even have to consciously bring those values into my life, they just found their way in there! Try it for yourself and see what happens.
