Is Freddie Flintoff going to change career and become an accountant?!

By Selina Barker

We had to share this with you - it made us laugh so much. The Association of Accounting Technicians has suggested that Freddie Flintoff become an accountant!

"As the England cricket team proved victorious in the Ashes and the season comes to a close, heroic player Freddie Flintoff prepares to retire from Test cricket. With questions arising about his next move, the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) proposes an entirely new career move for Mr Flintoff – the field of accountancy."

Er...OK, not quite the same as Gordon Ramsey going from footballer to chef, but good for them for suggesting it.

Their reason being that "totting up the scores of wickets, runs and innings during a cricket match requires exceptional mathematical skills – which many players have acquired themselves over their long careers. The scorer’s process of working out averages and projected scores is similar to double entry accounting, a system for recording transactions based on recording increases and decreases in accounts so that debits always equal credits. The means by which the scorer records the innings of the batsmen and the overs of the bowler, is similar to double-entry book-keeping because they have to check that the scores balance after each run is scored."

I don't know him well enough, but I wouldn't say that Freddie's love of cricket is due to the mathematical challenge involved. Nevertheless we like their championing of career change, no matter how bonkers this particular idea is.
