Are you using your time, resources and energy effectively to move forward with your career change? Stephanie Mount explains how personal energy management will contribute to making the change.

"The most precious resource (for businesspeople) is not their time. It's their energy. Manage it well". Robin Sharma

The more you take care of yourself, the more value you can add to yourself and the world. Energy is the capacity to do work. I suggest being aware of your four energy vessels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual and using them to our advantage by taking care of ourselves. Quite simply, it is about personal energy management. If you manage your energy skilfully you will be able to handle your career change effectively. This information is to avoid defaulting into survival zone and moving into the performance zone, by paying attention to your 4 energy vessels:

  • Physical: sleep, rest, fitness and nutrition
  • Emotional: feelings, intuition
  • Mental: intellectual purpose and stimulation
  • Spiritual: higher meaning and purpose connected to passion (values & beliefs)

Maximise and Build Your Energy In Systematic Ways

Earlier this year, I listened to leading energy expert share his passion for managing our energy, not our time. He used a profound metaphor that I’ve integrated into my daily ritual which encourages all of us to engage a Sprinter mentality as opposed to Marathoner mentality. Sprinters are pulsars, they push then recover, they work hard then renew. It allows us to make our performance better and enjoy more. Sprinters look down the track and see the finish line. They push down the track, reach the finish line, and then chill. One task at a time, one day at a time.

Create Daily Rituals

  • Take time to eat and enjoy your lunch
  • Ensure you sleep eight hours per night
  • Take a rest by listening to a song or two on your iPod
  • Go for a ten minute walk
  • Practise being mindful (meditation)

Pay attention to your physical vessel of energy – sleep eight hours per night, eat properly, move your body and practise being aware of your breath.

Valuing your energy will help you make better decisions about how best to apply it. It will help you decide which activities are deserving of your energy, as well as which activities negatively drain your energy. Whilst making a career change, apply your energy to tasks and activities that will build momentum each day. applying focused energy towards your career change vision will propel you to make it a reality.
