The road of a thousand miles begins with one step. I can't remember who's quoted as first having said this, but it rings very true. Many of us see career change as being something that requires a huge jump. One day you are here, and then, woahhh... then, you're there. I don't think I've ever heard of a story where it actually happened this way.

"I know I'm going there not really believing in what I do, but it's part of the job." This is what a client of mine said to me today, and it really struck me personally."I know I'm going there not really believing in what I do, but it's part of the job." "But this isn't possible Satu."... "It's a pipe dream Satu."... "I mean, ideally, yeah, it would be great, but it's not realistic."
I've heard these statements from clients so many times, I sometimes find it a bit frustrating.

It's that time of the year again. Change your life in X hours. Stop this habit. Anywhere and everywhere you look, you can tell it's change your life month'. I've seen it with my newsletter readers. All of a sudden there's a surge in how many people are doing the Free Goals Report' I offer 12 months out of the year. It's that time of the year again. Change your life in X hours. Stop this habit. I know, a cliche, but one that should not be forgotten in your career change process. I can hear in the language that many people use that they clearly see where they are now as being point A, and their career change being point B. The thing is that career changes are journeys. Check out Selina's (and the other writer's) blogs, and you can see cases in point about this.

The amount of people who want to give me their CV as a basis for their career change/shift is really high. At first I thought I'd missed a trick, and just recently did I consciously realise why I felt uneasy about this as a starting point. Would you consider yourself self-critical or maybe even a perfectionist? I find that a lot of people use these two descriptions to give themselves a hard time. I believe that I used to be like this myself. Yes, it's partly cultural. There are groups of people who do not value acknowledging successes if there are a few small mishaps that occurred along the way as well. But if you only concentrate on the latter, when will you ever be happy? Would you consider yourself self-critical or maybe even a perfectionist? A client of mine emailed me today to say he was feeling restless after our last session. He didn't want to overanalyse it, but clearly something was brewing within. We'd gotten to the point in our coaching where we'd done all the work on who he is, what he wants from his work and what he can offer to a potential employer, and we were now exploring all the job/career possibilities that he was inspired by to ascertain which ones he'd like to explore more.A client of mine emailed me today to say he was feeling restless after our last session. Just last week I read a US-based article that said that for 1 in 12 informational interviews leads to a job offer whilst 1 in 200 (and sometimes 1,500) online applications leads to one. I've read similar statistics before and whilst I have no idea where these figures came from, and the writers of the article did not share their sources, I wouldn't be surprised if the figures were not similar in the UK (at least London) as well.Just last week I read a US-based article that said that for 1 in 12 informational interviews leads to a job offer whilst 1 in 200 (and sometimes 1,500) online applications leads to one.
